Thumbs up ST 2.5 day , Nov. 20, 21, 2015 Tuna and rock cod.

This a little report on our 2.5 day pelagic / cod trip. I arrived at Seaforth at 6 pm and Pacific Star was docked and ready to board. Everyone started to trickle in and by 9 pm we were ready to go. After we all checked in Captain Mike informed us we were going to fish yft about 20 miles out of San Diego on the first day then on day two we would fish Cortez and Tanner Bank. Bait was 4-6” anchovies.

Day 1. 11/20/15

I woke up late from the motors starting up. When I was on deck I saw Chrissy and she informed me that Dennis and her caught a few yft off the flat falls before the sun came up. I should not have slept in.

We trolled around and hooked up on some yft and skipjack and I pick up a few skipjack from bait. The morning pretty much went like that. Later that morning it was my turn to troll so I threw out a black and purple speedster and with in a few minutes I hooked into a something big. After unhooked the safety harness I noticed my Avet 30 was almost half spooled. I looked to my right and saw another tuna crash another troller.

When the boat stopped the tuna took another strong run but I got a little excited and tighten the drag a bit and with in seconds I lost the fish. I was so upset at myself but learned a good lesson about not tightening my drag when excited.

Anyways two nice tuna came up around 30-40#. One tuna was caught on the slide with a surface iron. I believe it was Paul Zacks who caught his tuna on the side and also won jackpot for day one. The afternoon was more a cruise but the weather was beautiful so it was nice and relaxing.

Day 2. 11/21/2015

This time I woke up early to catch the tuna but they were a no show.

We were at Cortez bank and the water turned (64 degrees) so that was the reason why there were no tuna.

Most eventually fished the bottom for some nice grade reds, salmon grouped, etc. I had my heart set for tuna so I was flylining anchovies in hope of catching a lost tuna which never happened.

Around noon we moved the Tanner bank and at first I was trying for tuna but everyone was catching nice size cods so I eventually broke down and started to jig for cods.

At the end of the day we had limits of cod and a very nice turkey dinner. I wanted to say thank you George for putting on another great ST trip with a great, friendly, happy group of anglers.

PS. If anyone else has pictures please post them since I did not take many pictures.

That is fishing!

That red is as big as those first tuna we caught Friday morning. Nice job on the fly, Steve! I didn't see you with it after we left the bait receiver. Too bad the tuna didn't come out to play, would have been cool to see those whack that streamer.
I just like to fish.

Thanks for having me on your trip! So nice to meet everyone. The fly rod rockfish was "cheating", but ah well and sorry for the tangles you Freaks! Much love, happy Thanksgiving, and always tight lines.
