Default Horseshoe Kelp barracuda - 6/23 (late report)

I was able to get the boat in the water Saturday morning, hoping to score some local barracuda on the horseshoe kelp. Had my brother, Kevin, and two friends from Waco, Texas, Pete & James with me. We met at my house at 0500, but didn’t get away until almost 0600 because the Texans had to buy one day licenses online. We didn’t get to the launch ramp until almost 0645 and it was already busy. Still, in the water and moving by 0700. Nacho had decent sardines – large, but not too large, and it lasted all day. I found most of the fleet by the green buoy – just offshore on the Horseshoe and tried a drift, but it was too fast and just wasn’t working. The area looked fishy – 65 degree clean green water, birds, scattered bait schools, so I dropped the anchor and waited. About 1000 somebody threw the switch and we had barracuda eating both bait and jigs. I only got 2 because I was working with my brother and the Texans, but we managed 8 beautiful – didn’t even have to measure – legal barracuda. About 1200 I realized that I was the only one that knew how to fillet, so I called the fishing to a stop, went inside the harbor, had submarine sandwiches and cut fish. At the ramp, we were boarded and inspected by fish & game – very professional and quick. This was a warden; not one of those volunteers who ask about what you caught. I’m glad the Texans had licenses!! Back on the trailer and home by 1600. Boat ran great and everybody had a good time. Here’s some pictures.

Good job on the slimers. Would have been an expensive trip without the licenses.
