Oops--should add that its traditional to eat apples and honey on the New Year. The apples are meant to symbolize the roundness, circularity and never-ending aspect of life (they also ripen in the fall, when Rosh HaShonah always occurs, so they're handy, LOL), and honey is to have a sweet and good year.
